Patrick Hoelck
b., 1968, Santa Monica, CA
Lives and works in Los Angeles, CA
Patrick Hoelck's photography resonates because the work does not hide, pervert, destroy, or malign. Instead, it emboldens, signifies, nurtures, and resurrects an individual for who they are. Sexuality and celebrity status are consequential of being human—of being a man or woman, actor or actress, singer or musician, model or cult personality. Glamour and attitude are consequential of one's pride and self-respect.
Raised between California, New York and London, Patrick's upbringing was everything but typical. Significant childhood memories consisted of mostly "adoption, lust, motorcycles, crime and fights." He picked up photography later in life to pass the time while workaing as a music video director. An early break came when close friend and artist, Vincent Gallo, specially requested Patrick over the late Richard Avedon for a British magazine cover. Then the campaigns and editorials started rolling in.
His mentors include Velasquez, Basquiat, Degas, Diego, Lucian Freud, and John Cassavetes. But when asked what inspires him now, Patrick quickly replies, "my team." Having published 'TAR', a photography art book, produced a film for director Paul Thomas Anderson titled 'Coffee and Cigarettes', directed countless music videos and graced major fashion and entertainment magazines, he is now working on a publishing a coffee table book comprised of short stories and images, and has just directed his first feature film titled 'Mercy' due to be released in 2009.
